Identity Palette – The Secret History by Donna Tartt
Project Type: | Magazine spread, Identity Palette |
My Role: | Student |
Client: | Northern Alberta Institute of Technology |
Tools: | Adobe Illustrator |
Year: | 2020 |
I created this for my Visual Communications class, where I was tasked to choose three novels and create a magazine spread for each of them. These designs had to reflect the mood and themes of the novels. This one is based on The Secret History by Donna Tartt.
The novel follows a group of Classics college students who desire to live in an “Apollonian” and refined manner, but slowly fall into the “Dionysian” way of chaos and impulse, ultimately leading to the murder of one of the students.
I used Image Trace on a photograph of the statue of Apollo, and I positioned the image so that his arm extends to point towards the title on the right page for visual hierarchy.
Of the three small graphics, the first is a lyre, representing the Greek god Apollo; the grape and the chalice represent Dionysus. I placed them in this order to reflect the characters in the novel descending from order into chaos.
